Yes it’s true, I had a relapse and all of a sudden I found myself sitting on a motorcycle.

Mark, aka Markus, got me hooked up with Luis, who had the goods, and we made a deal. I tried it, and I was hooked. It was a brand new Osborne, 200cc, enduro, very nice.

The fourth member of the gang is Glenn, he’s a full patched member.

Markus, being the leader of the club, organized a two day trip, that included 3 caves that needed to be looked into.

We left Rio Dulce 8:00 Saturday morning and travelled north to Chacté. This was a lot of fun, getting to know the bike, seeing new sites, and working the kinks out of various muscle groups.

At Chacte we turned east, and were now travelling on a gravel road through rolling hills.

We pulled over to view this crazy huge large gaggle of hawks.

With the landmass starting to pinch off here in Guatemala it forces the migratory birds to form these large gaggles, ….according to google.

After two and a half hours we reached our destination.

Spoiler alert, we were not really at the caves yet. We now had a 20 minute hike on a very slippery trail down to the base where the first cave was.

As we entered the cave you could feel the temperature drop, that was very nice.

“Naj Tunich“ is the name of this cave. It means “Stone house” in the Mayan language. The cave was rediscovered in 1979 when a man was hunting and his dog chased a wild pig and it went to the cave’s entrance. The cave has several passages going back hundreds of meters, but these passages have been closed off to the public.

After exploring this cave we hiked another 20 minutes to a second cave. This was also very interesting and had some replication of Myan art and symbols.

After hiking back to our motorcycles, we geared up and headed off to the city/town of Poptun, where we had booked rooms at a nice Hacienda.

After a good night sleep and a great breakfast we were ready to hike to our third cave. It was 45 minutes hiking through jungle, hills and fields to the cave’s narrow entrance.

This cave has a pool, and Mark decided to check it out.

On the way back to Rio Dulce we stopped at our club house, which belongs to Luis’s sister.

We had very refreshing refreshments, then continued our way home.

Yesterday Luis Dave and I went for a fun ride to el Estor and back.

We made a few stops for coconut water, smoothies and a nice lunch.

We also stopped to check out this river and canyon. We saw monkeys and a couple owls. That was a nice surprise.

We made it back to Rio Dulce without any serious issues. We debriefed at Sun Dog over a cool beverage then did our secret hand shake and rode off into the sunset.

Cathie Sequoia and I are planning to rent a car soon and do some more exploring of Guatemala. I’m looking forward to this up coming adventure.
